Hans Böhm speaks French, German and Czech at home, as his parents and housemaids come from different countries.
But at his favourite summer camp, he is told that the Germans are the best and the other nations are the worst. The anti-hero Böhm, who comes from a small town in western Bohemia, makes his way through war-torn Central Europe, but the end of the war brings no redemption. What characterises our personality? How far would we go to save our lives? How strong are our deeply rooted moral imperatives?
